Sales Representative - New & Used Vehicles

Job Description

A Vehicle Sales Representative sells new and used vehicles as well as value-added services such as maintenance plans and warranties to customers. They frequently refer customers for insurance quotations and finance and organise the trade in of existing vehicles.  They assist customers by matching their desires, needs, and budget while discussing many variables such as engine size, towing and passenger capacity, fuel consumption, and other aesthetics such as interior lining and paint colour.

Overall Sales Representatives sell retail products, goods, services and in this case vehicles to customers. Sales Representatives in the vehicle industry are commonly referred to as Sales Consultants or Car Salesperson. Sales Representatives consult with customers to find what they are looking for and determine how to offer the best product. They answer questions, offer alternative solutions, and discuss current promotions such as end of financial year sales. They build relationships and ensure a smooth sales process, processing, or organising deposits, finance, and payment and delivery options. In this industry they may work in a busy used vehicle car yard or in a state-of-the-art showroom. They may also work in wholesale or in an auction environment. Vehicle Sales Representatives commonly have a mechanical background or many years of experience working with vehicles.

There are no formal educational requirements to work as a Sales Consultant or Sales Representative in new or used vehicle sales.

Most companies will give you training on the job, where you can learn from a Sales Manager or Senior Sales Representatives. You will also be likely to receive training from Sales Consultants about product they sell.

However, prior qualifications or experience working with vehicles would give an edge when discussing many mechanical aspects and features with a customer.  Having mechanical knowledge or a background working with vehicles would be an advantage but not essential.
